Is this a good idea? I have a Dell dimension 3000 with Windows XP Pro installed. I am curently using cable internet, but I was wondering if I could get a wireless card installed and try to run free internet on it from my apartment. I also am using a laptop and it has a wireless internet card that alows me to conect to the internet from the apartment, so I know I have access to a wireless signal. I just want to know if I can do the same with my desktop without having to pay 300+ dollars a year for cable internet. Thanks for your response.

Um, if the apartment building is not providing the wireless signal you are stealing from someone else. If they track you down you can go to jail.

If your internet is provided as part of the apartment service, the easiest way is to just get a USB NIC card and see what happens. Lots of cable companies are using USB now instead of PCIs..... The USB 2s are pretty fast.

If it's not part of the complex - you are using someone else's connection. I guess he's responsible for putting a security code in their router.

Buy a wireless adapter if you do not have one. Plug it in. Find the network on the wireless manager, type in the password if applicable, connect.

I do that it works great. Get a PCI one for the best speed.
