I just think women who do this are so lazy because they don't want to wash the dog.

I have a Golden Retriever and I have found the best way to give him a bath is to take him in the shower. It is easier to rinse him off, and since I'm already in the shower I can rinse off all the dog hair as well.
In addition, washing him in the shower stall gives him an enclosed environment so that when he does shake-off it limits where it goes. And he can't get out.
It works great in the winter as where I live it can get below zero and is too cold to wash him outside.
