My husband deals with heartburn at least once a day if not more, and I do know that he needs to go see a doctor to get a prescription, I am wondering what can he do to get rid of some of it.... Any ideas??? Has anyone dealt with this and found something that will work.... My husband refuses to take time off of work, and if he gets snowed out, he'll call that morning, but the doctors office don't ever have any openings.... and I am sick of him taking so many tums... they do help the heartburn when it happens, but we honestly go through at least 5-6 big containers of the tums smooth dissolve every month...... and that is way too much.... Also one of his big issues is night heartburn..... He will wake in the middle of the night with severe heartburn, and he takes tums... then it goes away, and he eventually falls back asleep..

I just know that the heart burn is bad, and something else needs to be done.... Any advice will be great!!! and if anyone has any ideas on what the cause may be.. that would be great as well... Thank You!!!!!!!

Heartburn is caused by acid reflux and can cause erosion of the esophagus (food tube), and can cause cancer. It can cause the esophagus to narrow (strictures) which is also a bad sign. Prilosec is expensive but one a day will very likely control the heartburn and allow the sores (ulcers) to heal. If one a day doesn't control it, a stronger prescription can be obtained from a doctor, which may be paid for by your insurance.

Sounds like acid reflux. He has to be seen by a doctor. There is a procedure for acid reflux and it's not what you would call major surgery. His doctor can prescribe something like Nexium. It's very popular right now and he only takes it once a day.He doesn't need to be taking tums as if they were breath mints.Acid reflux eats up the lining on the esophagus and can cause cancer.Get him to his doctor before its too late.Good luck and Take care.

I know he doesn't want to go to the doctor, but you must insist. I had heartburn for years, and I found out I had acid reflux and erosive esophagitus. I lot of mine was caused by stress, and I used to smoke. You might want to try prilosec, and stay away from tomato products, chocolate, or peppermints. Good move stopping the soda. Good luck

So if you're looking for an answer that doesn't involve medicine or surgery here you go...first off you want to elevate the head of the bed when he sleeps (lots of pillows), avoid laying down right after eating, avoid stooping, bending or tight fitting garments...weight loss really helps and here are some foods to avoid if you want to avoid heartburn: chocolate, peppermint, onions, highfat foods, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and citrus...especially right before laying down!
