I recommend Japan Airlines first, and United, second. I've lived in Japan for 3 years, and I travel back to the states about twice a year. Those 2 airlines are the only ones I like as far as service and comfort.

Tokyo is gigantic. I live in Tachikawa, but I'm still a 2 hour train ride from Roppongi, and about an hour from Shibuya. Ginza to Shibuya is about 10 miles. Definitely take the train. It's very efficient and a lot faster. If you get lost, just ask the guys at the train info boxes. Usually one of them speaks at least a little English.

Tokyo is a BIG city with many different areas. To see the major ones I really recommend to take the train. Just from Ginza to Shibuya is a walk of 7-13 kilometers depending on the part of Shibuya......

Here is a good website about Japan:

Here you can look up train schedule and price:

It depends on where are you coming from. I'm assuming that you are coming New York to Tokyo, then you'll have four airlines to choose from: American Airlines, Continental Airlines (from Newark Airport), Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. All the airlines except Japan Airlines offer daily flight to Tokyo non-stop. Japan Airlines has 10 flights to Tokyo per week so on some days they have 2 flights.

I prefer Continental Airlines when I fly to Tokyo Narita Airport but I might be biased because I'm OnePass member and usually upgrade to BusinessFirst. Their flight number is CO 009 going to Tokyo and CO 008 for the return flight, but they only offer 2-class service.

American Airlines offers 3-class service on their flight AA167 & AA 168 and they also code share with Japan Airlines so you can fly on Japan Airline flight and accrue AAdvantage Miles if you are a member. It give you the flexibility depart New York with 2 to 3 daily departure. Japan Airlines' JL005 & 006 is a daily flight and JL047 & JL048 are the ones that operate 3 times a week.

The last one is All Nippon Airways (ANA) NH009 & NH010. They fly the latest version of Boeing 777-300ER and they have a 4-class service (First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class). I have never been on ANA but I heard they are good.

If you want a feeling of being in Japan once you board the aircraft, I recommend flying the Japanese carriers especially ANA.

Now to downtown Tokyo, the city is kind of like New York that you will have to take trains, subways and taxi to get around. I really wouldn't recommend the bus unless someone in Tokyo is with you. It is a pretty long hike from Ginza to Shibuya and a little closer with the trip to Tokyo Tower.

For going to Shibuya, it is pretty simple, all you have to do is find Ginza subway station (G9) and get on the Ginza line to the final stop which is Shibuya station (G1). Now going to Tokyo Tower, their are few stations that is 2,000 to 3000 ft away. The closest one I think is Akabanebashi (E21) on Oedo line. Another is Kamiyacho (H5) on the Hibiya line or Onarimon (I06) on the Mita line.

I hope I didn't overload you with too much information. The last 2 sources are the subway info and the map. I hope it helped and enjoy your time in Tokyo.

I've been to Japan once, and I flew United, the seats were a bit cramped. I am not loyal to any one airline however so I will fly with whoever I choose at the time. I find my tickets from: http://www.jtbusa.com you tell it where you are coming from and it will break down prices from many different carriers.

You can walk around Tokyo, however, it can be a very long walk to get anywhere as Tokyo is an enormous city. the trains definitely make it easier to get around. When you arrive in tokyo, pick up a Tokyo Metro Guide, its a free booklet that has some touristy spots, as well as a good subway map.

If you plan on walking a lot, I would definitely suggest bringing a good gps unit as well as a compass, the gps to mark points of interest, and to find your way back to your start point, the compass because when you get off the main roads, you see much more interesting things, however, tokyo roads are very twisty and you can get turned around very easily. I am not sure of the distance between where you are staying and where you want to go, but I suspect it might be a quite far walk to do in one day. I would definitely suggest visiting the East gardens for tokyo castle, as they are very nice. and a nice walk around.

http://tabasco.cs.ucdavis.edu/destination/?locationId=6&op=locationDetail has a good bit of information from a quick glance, there is also a link to the subway fare calculator and instructions page, but it is not connecting to that site lately for me so that may be down.

JAL (Japan Air Lines) is what I would recommend. Their service is absolutely great. As for the hotel, depending on where it is situated in that area, you can walk to some places of interest. Otherwise, get a rail pass so you have more mobility and reach more places. For distances of a few miles, cabs are available.

I traveled to Hokkaido, Japan by JAL. Their service is very good. I used to sit on the other airline but their foods are so hard to eat. However the food JAL served is nice to eat. By sitting on this airline, you won't have the communication problem with them. Although majority of the Japanese not able to speak English, the air-hostess of the JAL can speak fluently English. Moreover, the seat of JAL is very comfortable. My seat was Class J, and the JAL plane has enough space for us to walk and sit unlike the other airlines which don't have enough space.
If you have any question, they are very helpful to help you.
