It is not normal to lose your vision when one eye is closed. It could be a number of things, but the first thing that comes to my mind is Macula degeneration in the eye you can't see with when the other eye is closed. You need to have your eyes examined by an eye doctor...not one who gives prescriptions for eye glasses, but one that dilates the eye (with drops -- it's not painful) then, with special binocular type eye instruments the doctor can see deep into the eye. I have it done yearly, so I know it's not painful.
My husband has Macula degeneration in one eye. It blocks out the central vision, and with that eye, he only has peripheral (side) vision.
After you see an eye specialist, if you do have Macula degeneration, e-mail me and I'll tell you what supplements my husband takes to improve (or stop further degeneration of) his vision. (A different eye doctor recommended the supplements years ago when he was first diagnosed.) His vision has slowly improved since taking them.
