the rotten egg smell is sulfer and so the catalytic convertor should be the first place you the mechanic should look for that as for grinding sounds when turning i have coustom rims on my car and so it has over sized tires and so if its only when you have turned it to the farthest right and left the wheel will go then its your tires if its not then its a steering element but i know of no fixes for the catalytic convertor other then get to a shop and quick the damage will be adding up

It DOES sound like your catalytic converter has gone south (that's the "rotten egg" smell you're experiencing). How many miles are on your SUV? I hope you've only used unleaded gas; if you haven't that makes the catcon go away quicker.
As for the grinding sound while you're turning? That sounds like CV (Constant Velocity) joints are also going away. I'd take it to a GOOD mechanic and have him check out the entire SUV; your State Inspection Station would be able to pinpoint both of these problems when you bring it in for inspection.

without knowing the year make and model as well as the emisisions certification I can say that they are right. Depending on the laws in your state you may need to replace it. Depending on the age you may not.
Up here in redneckville we take the pipes apart and ream out the guts of the converter so it looks like it is still there and functioning and it reaslly isn't but we still pass emissions. You need a good grass roots mechanic stay away from the dealer, and if you need to replace it with a functioning unit call me Tuesday aftetr ten am at 1 877 987 2MOM www.momsautoparts.com

I work in a garage, and I see people bringing cars in and telling me what they thing the problem is. To tell the absolute truth, no mechanic cares what they thing the problem is. the mechanic just wants to know the initial complaint. any mechanic that takes advice on how to do his job fromt he cutstomer isn't that great in my opinion. Mechanics are not dumb people. I am currantly in SAIT for the classroom part of my apprenticeship. Just bring the car in and have them diagnose it. There are a few things that can be causeing these problems, and just guessing could lead somone on the wrong path and cost you more. let them do they're job.

your battery could be giving of gas(very volatile dont smoke near it) the grinding noise is probably unrelated to the smell
but needs to be checked out(soon)

eew yea i get that crap smell too. i think it could be the cat. i think the grinding sound is unrelated, for that i would replace the power steering fluid.

the smell could be anything, but it sounds like you have all whell drive, and your cv joints are bad or the boots need to be changed, or you have too big of tires and they rub when you turn.
