Smoking damages your lungs by building up tar, which is black junk, in your lungs. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. Smoking puts you at a higher chance for lung disease and all kinds of cancer. If you ever need surgery, smoking will slow down the healing process.
Second hand smoke can be fatal as well. If you want to see your son grow up as healthily as possible, try to quit. It is possible.
Here's a website that will guide you in the right directions if you consider quitting: http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/how2quit.htm

All you have to do to quit smoking is to stop buying cigarettes. After a few weeks of discomfort, you are going to get over your urge to smoke. I really think it should be little more difficult than quitting caffeine, or another stimulant addiction. You might get headaches for a while, but the result will be worth it. If you can't do that, see a doctor for help. Really, you need to cut that out of your life. Good luck!

Yes, you are killing yourself! If you don't die before your son grows up, he will still be witness to your addiction, and the addiction will steal time from you and from him. Also, if you are smoking around him, he is getting second-hand smoke which can predispose him to developing allergies and asthma. Quit now - no excuses! It will be painful for the first 72 hours, especially with the physical withdrawal symptoms from nicotine, but it will get easier and easier as time goes on - I promise.

After all the years of warnings and messages of dangers from smoking, you still don't think it's bad? Do you live in a hole? Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer and the number two cause of death. They are banning smoking in public places to eliminate second hand smoke to others. Why do you think they are doing this?
Therefore, YES...you are killing yourself. You are addicted because of the nicotine. I hope you don't smoke around your son. It's bad enough he;ll smell the stench on your clothes. To smoke around him only proves you have no consideration for his health.

yea, it's true. when i started smoking, no one told me how (quickly) addictive cigs were. like you, it started out 1 or two a day, and quickly progressed to a pack a day. and like you, i do enjoy it. but, now we know a lot more about cig smoke and the dangers than we did when i was a kid. and part of that knowlege is that some people use cigs to "self medicate". talking to your doc (or his/her smoking-cessation person) about quitting will give you a great education on this subject. I hope you do quit. soon.

When I was in high school my father, a two-pack-a-day man, used to cough so much at night that I'd lie awake, terrified that he was dying. Often he'd cough until he threw up, then start coughing again a couple of minutes later. Well, I guess I didn't really keep him alive by not sleeping, but he did hang on until I was in college. He never knew his granddaughter, my daughter, as she was born after he died.
Is this what you want to have your son remember about you?

hmm, 3 days left to answer this question, will you be around to see the results? my god friend, you gotta stop, get help. 3 packs a day will mean mega tons of determination to go cold turkey. it's not only you that hurts, how much second hand smoke are others breathing? that's even worse.

When I see someone smoking I think of Darwin's Natural Selection.
There's such a huge body of evidence that informs us of what smoking does, yet people still do it.
