Like into english jaopnese words-help please!-asap needed!

To be quite honest, very few of the online translations work very well. I have used freetranslation.com for a word or phrase, but to translate more than that, I'm afraid they just don't work all that well. I majored in a foreign language in college and I know they don't work and all the foreign language professors always talk about how horrible they are.

I have tried to communicate with a friend in Japan, I thought I could do it but I think the computers in the U.S. are not able to handle it, just shows up as boxes not symbols of Japanese language.
