Well there are two ways. The card is for identification only

Now when you last used it did they take money from you. If they did, then you are on the pay as you use them plan.

Now if you went up to the counter, they scan your card, and do not ask for money then you are paying the I think $17 a month, for up to 3 movie plan.

This is what I have with Hollywood video. I use 3 dvd movies a day and I sure save in a month. Cuz, I dont work.

Both stores offer free memberships, and at both stores you normally pay for every movie you rent. However, both stores also offfer monthly plans where you can rent as many movies as you want, 2 or 3 at a time. The prices vary.

Blockbuster also has an online plan where you sign up at their website and movies are mailed to you, it's comparable (but slightly inferior) to NetFlix.

Not real sure about Hollywood video but with Block buster you have to pay every time unless you're on some special deal which I'm not sure what it cost, but you only pay a monthly deal.

You pay every time you rent a movie, unless you join on-line and then its a monthly fee. To join on-line you need either a credit or debit card.
