She is afraid to leave her house, if she accepts a lift she's OK. She doesn't like others to know, but I think she could get some help from her doctor. She won't go, though, even if we walk there together. I hate to hear her being criticised when others don't know how fearful she is, and how hard she is trying to get over herself.
Should I tell people she has this difficulty?

Your friend need to seek therapy for this. It can become more serious that this. A phobia that hinders her from going outside, it has a source that she needs to find out what actually triggered this behavior and try to move beyond it. Something may have happened to her that she has a fear of now. Please do not tell her story until she is ready to tell it herself. Just be there for her. If she is going some place with you, you have to be there by 7pm tell her you will pick her up at 630p that way you will have time to get her out of the house. I would continue to do things with her outside of the house until she gets use to doing it. But she will still require professional help for the fear.

It sounds like she has agoraphobia. There is help available. A counselor could give her more help than her doctor.
