March is a good time.

But...

Have you learned nothing from those Discovery Channel shows where tourists always get flesh eating parasites and brain worms from walking around in the jungle down there? I'm serious. Good God, man.

Watch those shows and do not go there!

However, if you're talking about crime.... Columbia, Brazil, Panama and Venezuela are the bad ones. Costa Rica is rather pleasant....

...EXCEPT FOR THE FISH THAT LOVE URINE (CANDIRU) AND ENTER YOUR SPECIAL PLACE THROUGH ANY MEANS NECESSARY AND INCH UP IT VEEEERY SLOWLY WITH SPIKES ON THEIR BACKS!!!!....

... but they have nice pottery, too.

If you want to get into dangerous places; you can find that in New York, Los Angeles or Costa Rica. The smart thing to do is don't carry lots of jewerley, money on you, or try to impress anybody. Second, try to be always with somebody and use common sense. By the way, I have also been in Venezuela and Colombia. Their cities are pretty safe and normal; however, if you think you are Rambo and want to go to the jungle is up to you. Relax and enjoy the beauty and currency exchange of the latin american countries.

Costa Rica is always beautiful. I went there, & it's best to go to San Jose. It's pretty safe & cheap.

I don't know about March, but I can say it was very safe. I felt like the Costa Ricans ("Ticos") were very appreciateve of my tourist dollars and they took very good care of us.
