More so after the computer has just been turned off. The adapter is still connected to the laptop and the power outlet at this point. Any help in this regard will be appreciated.

That is the power cells that hold the charge popping out, replace your A/C power adapter and you will be fine. Check to see if it is over heating.

Yep, I agree with the above answers. Normally a popping sound in something like this is a electric arc. Something about ready to blow. What this do is convert the wall AC into the laptop DC. So, it probably a small transformer or filter capacitor (more likely) arcing. I would replace, because if it were to crap out it "may" damage your laptop with a power surge.

Time to get a new adapter. Sounds like either a capacitor breaking down or transformer. DONT LEAVE THE THING PLUGGED IN OVERNIGHT OR WHEN YOU ARE NOT THERE!!! Keep a fire extenguisher nearby if you wanna keep using it.

I had a similar problem. I ended up replacing it because no one could figure out what was wrong.
