No, you will have no claim to the child, and therefore will not have to pay child support.

Generally, this is done so that the new spouse (step father) can adopt. In most (maybe all) cases, you would not have to pay child support. But, you have no right/claim to said child after doing so...IE no visitation. You have relinquished all parental rights. See an attorney for the laws in your state.

With that said, if the mother simply wants you to sign away all rights....Get an attorney. You can bet she has one. Be careful about signing away "partial" rights. IE you may sign a document releasing her of allowing you any further contact, but still requiring you to pay child support.

Either way, get an attorney, go over the papers.

Here in Virginia even though a father signs his rights to the child away/ meaning he basically will have no contact with the child and no rights to make decisions for the child,he may still be made to pay support.

No The father has no more legal rights and he is no longer the child's father -- it like you never existed and you can't see the child or visit the child. The child seek you out later on their own but they usually don't., GO for OPEN A DOPTION -- better choice for the child and the father until you get your act together.

it may depend on your state. i know in va if you sign over rights you have no rights to the kids what-so-ever. which means you don't have to pay child support. but you can't see them or have any say in their lives and what goes on at all. all though i don't understand why a father would want to sign away his rights.

That means you would be giving up ALL rights to the child. No child support, no visitation NOTHING.

this means you will no longer have any father right to the child nor will you have any responsibility for the child

No, after you relinquish your rights you no longer have to pay child support.

Generally it's when the child is going to be adopted by the new spouse.
