I'm talking about a 1990 Chevrolet G30 van, 5.7 engine, 65,000 miles
After an excessive amount of cranking, it restarts, but with a whole lot of smoke from the exhaust. What in the world does it need?!

Today we did change the spark plugs; they were very badly needed. We changed the ignition cable set, distributor cap and rotor, and the vehicle has fuel injection, seems to have plenty of fuel. Fuel pump had been previously replaced.
Check Engine light not on at this time.

Are you sure it's A to B and not A to G?

is there a check engine light? if so go get a chiltons or haynes manual and it will tell you how to check the code.

You more than likely have a bad sensor in your intake system. The good thing about older GM vehicles is you can use a paperclip to get diagnostic codes right from your dash board. The check engine light will blink and tell you whats wrong.
It will blink then stop and blink some more.. blink, blink, pause blink,blink,blink would be 23. From the table that would be manifold air temp sensor. Hope this helps you. Check this site for pinout of your on board diagnostic port, then short out a and b with the key off, then turn the key to on and the ignition off.

jumper pin a to b to get codes, should flash code 12 3 times, this is normal. and other codes need to be addressed.
First thought of your complaint is either a bad coolant temp sensor or connector or a corroded pcm gorund wire at or near the thermostat housing. Also a defective MAP sensor or plugged or collapsed MAP sensor vacuum hose.
Did you check fuel pressure?
Should be between 9 and 14 psi and hold it with key on engine off.

I'd certainly take a look at the fuel filter,had this happen a couple of times once the filter was changed all ran well

i own a repair shop,and if you,ll take it by any auto zone they will scan it for you free of charge and tell you what it is that's causing this to happen,id say its either a 0-2 sensor,or a throttle position sensor causing this to happen,,good luck i hope this help,s.

does it have carb or fuel injection// as far// give it complete tune up// plugs,wires ,dist cap rotor,and ,, start there see if that dont make huge difference

having similar problem with diesel G.M.C. G-20 98, starting to think it's self-destruct sequence.let me know what you find out!
