Some joker could have turned off the water to your house. Most houses have a valve (like a hose bib) that can be used to turn the water off between the city main and the house (assuming you're on a city system), so you won't have a fountain if you need to work on the plumbing. See if you can locate this shutoff valve and determine whether it is on or off.
If someone turned it off, then after you've turned it back on (righty-tighty, lefty-loosey), take a screwdriver and remove the faucet handle and put it somewhere you can find it if you need it. That way only a joker with vice-grips can turn your house water off.

If you have a well the pump could be shot or the fuse/circuit breaker should be checked.
If you have city water, see if your neighbors have water. If so, the city should come out and check this for you for free. They may not be able to fix it, if the problem is outside their jurisdiction, but they will likely diagnose this problem without charge to you.

If you are on city water check with neighbors to see if they have water. You may have a break in your water lines. Remember if you do not have water running to your hot water heater you will burn up the elements in it--shut of power to your hot water heater if the water has drained out of it.

Kate's answer is the best. Check the meter, then call the water department if you are on city water.

Is the main meter spinning ?
No - your water was shut off
Yes - you have a break on the feeder line between the meter and your house and will eventually have a sinkhole.
