This are the discs that it will play: DL is dual layer

CD, DVD, CD-R, SVCD, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL, Video CD

First ensure that you have the button to play DVD. If your button is for the VCR even though you insert the DVD, the DVD will not play. If you are lost than stick both media in. If your VCR does not play then it is connected properly. If the VCR plays, then you need to find the DVD button.

Now if the DVD will not play, turn the DVD around and at an angle check the shiny, smooth surface out. If you see smudges or whatever, get some tissue paper and rub up and down (Not in a circular motion) until the spot or smudge is gone. You are supposed to handle DVDs by the edges.

Now once done or the side is clean, then your DVD has an error in it. Normally, this is from a scratch or scratches from laying around unprotected. Also, recording difficulty arise and the format is not done right. In other words, you got a bad disk.

You failed to say if it were a home made movie or a blockbuster type of movie. Home made DVD you should try to play on the computer and see what happens.

most dvd players only play vob (professional dvds like the ones you buy) and avi at least. As for other formats, you could try looking in the instruction manual.
