west of the ural mountains = europe

east of ural mtns= asia

it's in both, as another poster said, the majority of the people live in the europe part, the majority of the land area is in asia.

Most of the Russian territory lies in Asia; but the majority of the people live in Europe: so to me, its rather a European country; though it doesn't belong to the European Union.

Part that's west of the Ural Mountains - the one with most of the population - Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc = Europe
East of the Urals = Siberia (Irkutsk, Vladivostok) = Asia.
