Be genuinely interested in and attentive to others. That's the foundation. People enjoy your company more if they feel that you also benefit from theirs. If they feel you don't care about them and ignore them, then they're going to return the favor.
But still be yourself. If you must invent a personality for people to like, then be DAMNED good at doing it and never let anyone suspect that you're a phoney. ;)
