They're seen as dangerous. Some people hate being in dangerous situations and others are adventure seekers and adrenaline junkies.

Some people are afraid that they might come at them and constrict or bite them. They usually just see this kind of stuff on tv which gives them the fear of snakes. But there are some snakes that are highly toxic and could have a hard bite that you should look out for. Your friend probably grew up with pet snakes which is why he's used to them.

I am people, so, I'm giving my own perspective. I don't like snakes, I've never been exposed to them in a positive light. My very first knowledge of them is from the Bible, so, that is quite self explanatory. I've seen a few small green ones that live in the grass, but I know those ones are not dangerous, still I avoid getting up close. I enjoy watching them in various settings on tv if it portrays their living conditions and habits. I've seen many in cages. Still, I keep a distance. I will get scared even if they are said to be harmless and they get too close.

Snakes have traditionally carried the archtypal image of evil such as the serpent from the garden of eden and people fear them as some are deadly poisonous. But there is a growing rebellion that has adopted the snake image as in stage strippers as a sex symbol turning fear into fascination for many pet owners they are easy to care for and considered cool . the best pet I ever had was a seven foot python.

I too am very uncomfortable around snakes. I will say that the people who are big into them are probably not afraid of them because they have educated themselves on them. If we know how to care for, handle and know what can be expected of these creatures then there is less to fear. There are many people who sware that rats make the best pets. Each one of them have said the same thing, that rats are very loyal pets. They know their pets. Snake owners know their pets.

Some people have just learned to face their fears; a snake lover has faced their fear of snakes and come to terms with it. A person fearful of snakes has learned to cope with their fear of fear itself, and so has no problem being fearful of them.
