Many years ago, fast food restaurants were constructed so that the pick up window was located in the middle of the building, with the kitchen being on one side of the drive through area, and the counters and tables being on the other side. It was basically two seperate rooms connected by a roofed drive through area. Needless to say, this caused a lot of problems: employees had to bring food from the kitchen, go across the drive through area, then to the dining room. Not a very good set up (especially during rain and snow), and also very expensive to build. Fast food buildings are no longer made this way, but the old name stuck.

Well seeing that it's typically at a fast food place, the original attempt at it, was convience, and if you drive-THROUGH, chances are, you won't have to stand or stop for a long time, as you will just go THROUGH without any issues, thus saving time for folks on the go. Drive-around doesn't really put the "saving time and fast" in the whole thing. Also, not all restaurants have a ROUND drive-thru.

Because the city building permit for a drive-around was thousands more, I understand they charge by the inch. Therefore, drive though was much cheaper.

I dont know! But you should petition to all fast food places. However, it is strange how they always say drive around, but the sign says drive through.
