A female dog.

I think if you investigated the word, it is a Scandanavian word for dog, not specifically a female dog. I know that is how it is interpreted in Icelandic.

It is used to criticize people who complain a lot and it is akin to the Yiddish Kvetch which means the same thing.

Since it has a original meaning in Scandanavian tongues, I would think it became common in English during the Viking invasions when they disembarked with their great gray dogs, Norwegian Elkhounds.

A female dog.

I usually hear the term used to apply to an un-altered "breedable" female or a mother dog.
