how do you tell if you usb port is fast enough for a video camra's firewire? and what are the specifications?

First Firewire and USB are not the same and are not interchangeable.

USB can connect up to 127 devices to a single USB port.
USB 1.1 is capable of transfer speeds up to 12Mbps.
USB 2.0 is capable of transfer speeds up to 480Mbps.
USB 3.0 is rumored that it will capable of transfer up to 4Gbps when it is released.

Firewire can connect up to 63 devices to a single port.
Firewire 1394a is capable of transfer speeds up to 400Mbps.
Firewire 1394b is capable of transfer speeds up to 800Mbps.

Well your USB port is either 1.0 or 2.0 speed.

Both will be able to run a video camera however 2.0 is much quicker and better quality.
Most recent PC's (within one year) come standard with 2.0 ports.

Firewire should be plugged into a FIREWIRE port.

USB and firewire are not the same thing and the recepticles are different.
