Congratulations on last month.

Don't worry it is something you learn, the first year or so of having your periods it can be difficult but you pick things up on how to deal with your period over time.

Keep record of your periods, although if you have only just started getting periods you probably won't be regular yet and keeping records is the best way of knowing when to expect your period. You can get really complicated and use methods to tell you exactly what is going on inside your body so when your period is due, but for now just keep a calendar of when you get your period, when it finishes and if you get any signs before your period is due.

There are loads of special calendars you can buy for this too, like these ones from Vinnie's - http://www.tamponcase.com/book1.html - or there are sites online that you can use to keep record of your period like this site - http://www.mymonthlycycles.com

The average menstrual cycle is 28 days, that is 28 days between the first day when you start bleeding and the next time you bleed, but everyone's menstrual cycle can be different, and yours is likely to be different until your body gets into the swing of things.

As things go on you might want to start taking evening primrose oil or black cohosh, ask at a health store for these, both of these help to regulate the hormones in your body so help regulate your menstrual cycle making it easier to know when your period is due. As a note hormonal birth control does not regulate your menstrual cycle as someone above suggested, it in fact suppresses your menstrual cycle and this would not be healthy for you.

There are some signs of menstruation, some women get PMS, cramps, bloating or break-outs, but not everyone gets these and they are perfectly avoidable with lifestyle changes such as healthy diet, and some herbal treatments.

Your discharge can change as well, you normally get a little more discharge before you are about to start your period because of the hormonal changes in your body and there can be a change in how it smells although it should never smell bad - this would be a sign of an infection. You may also find pink or brown discharge just before you're about to start your period as the blood starts to leave your body.

Normally my period comes every 36 days, when I'm about to start my period my breasts get bigger and firmer as well as a little sore, my skin becomes very sensitive to touch, my discharge and pee smells different, I become horny and my sense of taste and smell get stronger – as you can see, we are all different and learn our own little signs that our period is coming, you'll find these too in time.

You might want to look at getting a menstrual cup like a Divacup – http://www.divacup.com - this is a little cup that goes into your vagina to collect blood when you are on your period, one of the many things that make these good is that they can be worn before your period is due for up to 12 hours so you could put it in before you go to school roughly a day before your period is due to avoid getting blood on your clothing.

It's really a good idea to begin keeping track of when you start your period. While it will likely take some months to regulate (and some women's never do), you might start seeing a predictable pattern. The way you count is to count the first day you start to bleed as Day 1. Continue to count the days until the NEXT time you start your period. So, you count from the first day of your period until the NEXT first day of your period. You may start to see it's about 27, 28, 29 days (28 days is average)bewteen so you can have the necessary hygiene products with you. It's impossible to tell EXACTLY when you're going to start though. If you ever get that sensation you're starting, chances are it's too late if you didn't have a pad on.

Since you have started having your periods, this is a standard question you will be asked for physicals, medical treatment, xrays, prescriptions, etc. Imagine how embarrassing it would be when a doctor or a nurse asks you when the first day of your last menstrual period was and you have to say, "I don't know". Who else besides you would know such an initimate thing?

I completely uinderstand how you feel about Mom seeing bloodstains, and this proabably won't majke you feel any better, but remember--mom is a woman who has experienced exactly what you are going through and she understands. We've all had accidents and made messes. Relax and remember that all of this is part of being a girl. Mom, of all people, will understand (besides, there was a time when she wiped poo off your butt and she still loves you!!! :)

I hate to say this, but because you just got your first period, chances are that your periods will be irregular for the first year or so.

Most women, when they get it regularly, get it every 20-40 days (with an average around 28). Mark on your calender when you get it, and count up to the 28 day mark. Around there it may or may not come again.

You can sometimes tell when you are about to get it simply from signs. You may be bloated, have some short cramps. When I was young I used to get cramps and feel like I had to pee an hour before I got it.

If you are nervous about getting blood in your underware, 20 days after your last period start wearing panty liners. They are comfortable, don't smell, and are very lightweight. If you get your period unexpectadly, you will have something to protect your underware. As for having your mom see your underware, she will understand! She is a woman too after all! Know that she has been through what you are going through and will understand if there are a few leaks now and again. (or start doing the laundry yourself :P)

You can also consider keeping a spare pair of underware, a few pads and an extra pair of pants in your locker. Throw it all into an "emergancy bag" with some motrin, and if you happen to get some blood on you, you can get change before anyone notices!

Good luck with everything!

I am not sure how old you are, but I was about 14 when I got my first period.

The only way I knew for sure that it was coming was because I would really get a lot of cramping. I also started taking note on a calendar, when I had them so I could track it for the next month.

Try that too

you really cant tell until you get a schedule which takes a long while. Make sure you keep a calendar of the dates.
