Plan to get to home base, the home run, you don't need no seven ways for first base. If you want to play in the major leagues
you got to think about homers, first base is for minors, baby.

1. Base hit
2. Base on balls
3. Hit batsman
4. Fielder's choice
5. Error
6. Dropped 3rd strike
7. Runner on first is replaced by a pinch runner
8. Catcher interference

Ryan R, there is one thing I don't agree with you on. If a runner overruns 1st and comes off the baseline toward fair territory his protection is gone. He eigther needs to get to 2nd or back to 1st or he can be tagged out. I will say this though, that is the rule I've been taught for the high school baseball and fast-pitch softball game. I'm also a high school football ref and if there's one thing I learned fast it's that the pro game is very different from the high school game so if there's a different rule for overrunning 1st in the pros, that's possible.

1. Base hit
2. Base on balls
3. Hit batsman
4. Fielder's choice
5. Error
6. Passed ball on uncaught third strike
7. Wild pitch on uncaught third strike

When a base runner is hit by a batted ball that entitles the batter-runner to first, it's actually interference on the runner and a base hit for the batter-runner.

Interference is scored as an error; so is obstruction.

Please, do not follow Wikipedia. It is WRONG about the forfeit and the awarding of first. (It is also wrong about a batter-runner being in jeopardy if he overruns first and makes any movement toward second.)

Sir_...: At no level in baseball is there a rule that places the batter-runner in jeopardy for merely turning toward fair territory after overrunning first base.

People, please read the rule book before trying to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm an expert in this field. I would never lie about a rule.

hit, walk, hit by pitch, catcher's interference, dropped 3rd strike, fielder's choice, error.

By the way, you are correct, you can reach base when a runner is hit by a batted ball and the batter is awarded first base... BUT in the official ruling it is scored as a hit, so this would be a duplicate way of getting on base.

Walk, base hit, line drive to shortstop, and he misses, fly to the outfield, and they miss, or just kiss the girl completely.
