Usually they tell you to wait 6 weeks but I think the key is to wait until you feel comfortable and totally healed. For some women that may be a little before or later...If you are anxious it could make it painful just because you are very tense and then you will be nervous going forward.
As far as a lasting effect, it really depends on how the delivery went. If you tore or not during delivery, how tightly you were stitched back up...But I think it is rare for women to never "get their groove back" after enough time.
Good luck and take care!

I know people have tol me after a few kids its like getting noodle soup and sticking your penis in a can of soup. This is straight from guys mouths that have dated women with 2 or more children. I'm hoping nothing is lasting after your first child. I don't think this is with all people but with those who don't wait long enough. You can start having sex once your stitches heal bu I here it doesn't go back to where it was until 6 months. My hoice is to wait it out as long as possible. I haven't had sex in almost 16 weeks and don't plan on having sex until 6 months after birth. Sex its a big deal to me. People keep telling me after he baby come I will want to. But I'd rather have a tight cooch then a bowl of soup.

As per LoveMyKid's. With my first child is was only four weeks. We took it slow and if it felt uncomfortable for me, we stopped.
As for different down there. You will be different as you stretch but you can do Pelvic Floor Muscles. Tense as if stopping a pee. This strengthens your muscles and you'll get close to new (never as new).
Good luck.

4 weeks w/ a C-section and 6 weeks w/ a vaginal birth. It is a little different, but sex is still pleasurable.

The doctor says about 6 weeks... but i didn't listen to the doctor when it came to this. I would suggest when you think you feel ready.... and that your body has healed. My husband said that things (in our sex life) was better after i had the baby. he said "feels like the first time we had sex" when your boby heals itself, things tighten up down there.... more than what they were... :)
