I want to go online with my Nintendo Wii. So I went out and I bought the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Adapter and it turns out I need to have Windows XP for it. Should I buy Windows XP or just say screw the adapter and buy a wireless router?

Alright... this isn't an either/or situation. You need to set up a wireless network, which means that you need a computer with an ethernet card, ethernet cable, and a Wireless-G router that also supports Wireless-B (this is critical to getting the Wii online). It is recommended that this computer has Windows XP Pro on it.

You'll then need to use your computer to create a wireless network. If you get a Linksys router, it comes with software that will guide you through the process step-by-step. Make certain that you set security on your router and write down the Network Key somewhere (this may all sound baffling, but it will make sense when you start actually doing it). Once you have your wireless network up and running (and secure), with proper Internet connectivity, you can then set up your Wii to be online at all time. You will need to enter the networking key you wrote down during the wireless network setup, but after that, you'll be good to go.

Now, the USB adapter you bought could make life simpler, so long as you have a computer with Internet capabilities that has a free USB slot. Basically, this adapter works as a low-grade wireless router, allowing your Wii to connect to the outside world through your computer. Again, it is definitely recommended you get WindowsXP Pro, if it's not already installed on your computer.

I think you'll find that buying a router is considerably cheaper than purchasing XP pro. Linksys routers go for about $50 or so (if you don't get the model with Speedboost). With this, you'll be one step closer to having a wireless network for everything.

i'd suspect that in case you haven't got an Ethernet port, then you definitely haven't got a prompt card put in on your pc both. in case you do not, then the answer isn't yet. on your computer, you could get a Ethernet card (NIC) and use a cable, or a prompt card to position in for prompt service, or both in case you opt for to apply a cable at cases and prompt in case you bypass the computer to a special room. If the pc does no longer have an inner prompt adapter yet does have an Ethernet port, then you definitely can ought to make your recommendations up in case you opt for to apply a cable or purchase a prompt card. in case you opt for to apply the pc or your pc on prompt, then you definitely will opt for a prompt router. in case you get the prompt router search for suggestion from with someone knowledgeable who will handbook you by putting it up. do no longer promote your SSID, use protection, like filtering on MAC tackle, and encryption, to in reality remember to are literally not providing internet service on your neighbours and monitoring is harder. substitute the channel as virtually anybody makes use of 6, and also you'll get interference with close by routers on a similar channel. i can't allow you to recognize the way many cases I actually have run into human beings installation a prompt router, or maybe as it does no longer artwork, they connect by a neighbour's router. many times even as they were especially rooms of their homestead they used their router, yet in different places a neighbour's router gave a extra useful signal.

what OS are you useing right now? vista's going to come out in a couple weeks!
if youd have any use other use for a wireless wrouter, id say go for it. (also it has better signal strength
however they are a pain to set up, but thats minor compared to the hassle of installing a new OS (jeez, i hope its linux.)
