Pequod refers to the Algonquin speaking tribe native American Indians (the Pequot) that lived in the New England area during the 1600s. The tribe was nearly wiped out as a result of a war against them by an alliance of the Plymouth and Massachusetts bay colonies and their native American allies in 1637.

This incident may have served as the name for the ship the Pequod in Herman Melville's classic novel, Moby Dick.
