The majority of questions and answers on these boards have poor spelling and bad grammar. Does this mean that the posters are stupid, or not?

(And yes, I know this is the wrong category for this question.)

Absolutely. I'm no Einstein but if I don't know how a word is spelled I look it up! So I think it's more laziness than anything.

No, I don't. I lived a great many years in a very small town in Arkansas. A lot of people there speak in what can only be considered a close approximation of English and can barely spell their own name. Most of these people are not stupid, they just do not place the same emphasis on language as others do. I know there are those who think if you don't concern yourself with grammar and spelling there is something wrong with you but everyone has their own thoughts about what is important in life. Just because something is a sign of intelligence or class to one person does not make it so for everyone else in the world - the smartest people in the world accept that not everyone measures themselves with the same stick. So no, some people don't care and some people are concerned with other things. People should also keep in mind that not everyone communicating via the written word on online forums such as this are native English speakers. Some people are speaking/writing English as a second, third.... language. I only worry about another person's grammar and spelling if it is so poor that I have trouble figuring out what they are trying to say.

Bad Grammar Signs

You're in the right place. I've noticed that people with a high opinion of themselves, usually not shared by others, tend to be poor spellers. When their questions or answers are challenged, their spelling, grammar and whatever else they thought they possessed go out the window. These people will never use spell check, they think they're too good for that. Trolls are a good example but that may be because they're still in a lower grade at school.

No, to me it means most of us are not English majors. There is however that spell check thingeeee and more people should use it. Just because a person cannot express themselves well does not make them stupid. On the other hand there are many intelligent people who could use a good dose of common sense.

Not necessarily; content is more important than structure. In some cases, it may be that English is not the poster's first language; in other cases, it's laziness or lack of education (not intelligence) or youthful expression which prizes non-standard speech and writing as long as it conforms to the speech and writing of their peer group.

In general, I find that if the person agrees with me, the grammatical errors are more forgivable than if the person disagrees with me. (And I'm sure others think the same thing about me.)

Not necessarily. Some people are just lazy and others like to use all the little acronyms and short letter for internet speak. I think there is a good number of stupid people as well :) but I think its a combination of stupid, bad education, laziness, and poor attempts at shorthand.

Not necessarily. I know sometimes when I post, I'm in the hype of things and forget to spell check and my fingers just go too fast . I'm trying to be more cautious by proofreading it a couple of times and spell check (if I remember), but like I said when I'm all hyped up, as a lot of people are on here, we get lost in the moment.

Now, I can say that I wish people could refrain from the insults when someone misspells something. They could have made an honest careless mistake, as I have.

I culd kare less if its in thee wong catigory! ;-)

Some people that have poor spelling and grammar can be brilliant in other departments.

Well some of them are typos...as a FYI thing, Spell Check only works for the question, not the amplifying information.
