Of course, some are poets, have you listened to the radio these days? very few people actually "sing" But in my opinion, there are a ton of great writers out there, and what better way to be heard than to write a song and have people listen to it. Even better if that person can really sing, like Josh Groban, Christina Aguilera Mariah Carey, James Taylor, Elton John, Billy Joel- Not the greatest singer in the world but he writes amazing songs and makes them sound terrific. Some people write their own lyrics and sing, some people just write the music, then there are those amazing people who can do it all.

I like to think we all can sing. But i guess some are far more talented than others. Bernie Taupin is one example of a songwriter who cannot sing. He writes most of the lyrics to Elton John's music.

A lot of the time other members of a band apart from the lead singer may write a song and have someone else sing it for them. It may be more a reflection of the talent of those around them then their lack of talent.
