I guess it might depend on where you look at the news.
I look at Gamefaqs.com
I remember they had polls open to the public and PS3 got the least amount of popularity. What impress them them was the Nintendo Wii. At an affordable price and for everyone.
There has been a lot of videos and news making the Ps3 look bad. Its fat and bulky and its power isnt to its prime. Because usually 1st generation tend to be crappy. Like for example the Ipod. It use to be a fat machine and couple years later it is skinny, play videos, store photo, and up to up to an amazing 30 gigs. That is like a standard computer. So as the years go by 2nd generation PS3 will show its true potential. If you have a HDTV you will have to buy a separate cable componet just for it. Costing another 100 dollars. Games are expensive and controllers too. You will have to invest a ton of money on such a machine. The backward compatibility is bad. I saw a video where they did a comparison.
Also its kinda popular on the Blu-Ray. Since a standard Blu-Ray cost a grand they could get PS3 for 600.
So im kinda assuming it might not be popular now but possibly later in the future it will become popular.
That is a website where they compare the PS3 and Xbox 360:

Hello!!! The system has only been out 2 months. Of course its dead last in the console wars in terms of total units sold. The only reason the Wii is selling because most Americans are broke as hell and can;t afford a real system like the 360 or PS3.

There are plenty of PS3's just sitting on the shelves unsold. Don't believe the hype Sony tries to spoon feed the public. You can walk into nearly any electronics store and find, sometimes in the middle of the isle stacked up. Sony put out an extremely expensive console that the genral public cannot afford, and there is only one "must have" game for it..: Resistance:Fall of Man.
Can't say the same for the Wii, which is still sold out everywhere. See for yourself...

there is not really much bad news about the ps3. popularity wise, it is last place in the so called "console wars" against the xbox360 and wii. According to the market shares, ps3 has the lowest portion recording only about 1 million units sold. You can check up on there market share on the website:
http://nexgenwars.com/
Even though it has the lowest share, only about 1 million units were released, so it actually is doing very well, since pretty much every unit released was purchased.
