The King's government (his ministers) called a meeting of the Estates General for the first time in several hundred years. This was an outgrowth of the old medieval system that new taxes to generate new money could not be levied unless approved by the estates of the kingdom (nobles, clergy, commoners). When the estates met, they not only considered the request for new taxes, but they thought of demands to make of the government. The ministers tried to dismiss the estates. The delegates of the estates general left the building for a tennis court next door. There, they took "The Oath on the Tennis Court" that they would not disband until they had gotten equity for the people. The long term, you know.

For years, the French people were oppressed by poor leadership and a queen who bet and lost a lot of money. After the success of the American Revolution, the French were inspired and revolted against the French monarchy. The effect: a lot of people died (mostly innocent) but the long term outcome was that this was the first step toward a French republic.
