As they learn the facts, more and more Americans oppose the death penalty for pragmatic reasons. It is not effective for crime control.
I hope that people will take a few moments to consider the facts.
Here are some of the facts-
Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than lifetime incarceration. The extra costs come even before a trial is underway.
Re: DNA
DNA evidence is available in no more than 20% of all murder cases. It is no guarantee that we will never execute an innocent person. It is human nature to make mistakes.
Re: speed
If we speed the process we are bound to execute an innocent person.
Re: Deterrence
The death penalty is not a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.)
Re: Alternatives
More and more states have life without parole on the books. Life without parole means what it says and is no picnic.
Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty is not reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??
Re: Victims families
People should know that the death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.
Last of all, opposing the death penalty does not mean a person condones brutal crimes or excuses the people who commit them. I believe that the dialogue on the death penalty should be based on verifiable facts. People should make up their minds using common sense not revenge.

From a Christian perspective, I'm in favor of the death penalty. I don't see anything morally wrong with it.
From a financial perspective, I'm against it. It costs less to keep someone in prison for life rather than on death row for 15 - 20 years and pay for all the appeals needed to be certain of guilt. And if we are to execute a person, we should be certain of their guilt.
The specific deterrent effect (keep that individual from killing again) results either from execution or life sentence. The general deterrence (impacting others to not kill) is pretty weak when an execution happens so far in the future from when the crime was publicized.
It's a hard question, and one that will be debated until Christ returns, but from a Biblical perspective, I see nothing wrong with it.

Under the right circumstance. If there is undoubtable evidence, the death penalty may be appropriate.
But there have been numerous wrongful executions in the past so it should be a last resort.

Eye for an Eye if they killed someone close to me I would volunteer to pull the switch...that shouldn't change just because I didn't know the person wronged

i'm against it. it costs a lot of money to get one of the death shots and it's comming out of our pockets. i think it would be easier to torture the victims. i know, it sounds evil, but it's only fair to the people that the victim hurt

I am. People that kidnap and abuse children, pedophiles, and people that deliberated torture and murder another human being do not deserve to live - especially at taxpayer expense.

most certainly for it......................only for the worse crimes, murder etc, child crimes.
Bluebell........if you go with your theory of no one has the right to take the life of another then surely you negate your own argument..........
I also could cheerfully pull switch for one that has killed my child and I will face that when my time comes to account for my sins
