My mom says that when you're lying down, you don't bleed. I say B.S. Who's right? She also says that you don't bleed when you're in the water. Is that true?

Im sorry to say, but your mom is very very wrong. When I got my periods ( I had a hysterectomy ) 90% of the time they started when I was asleep. Granted, laying down SLOWS down the flow but doesnt stop it.

Also, you do still bleed when in the water but it doesnt show as much.

I dont know where your mom got her information but she really needs to be re-educated by a doctor before giving such bad information.

No and no. Perhaps it is true for her, but I have spotted my bedsheets often enough in the middle of the night to say without a doubt I do bleed even while lying down. I will say that it isn't as heavy and I will have a much heavier flow first thing in the morning because I'm sure some blood does pool in the vagina while sleeping.

In the pool? I have friends who won't swim during their period even with a tampon because of a traumatic previous experience.

So, while as a general rule I try not to disagree with mothers, I think that you're in the right on this one.

When i was younger, in my teens, my period just about stopped whenever I went swimming, but I did still bleed slightly. I'm up 3-4 times per night changing when I sleep because I bleed heavily even laying down asleep. Now that I'm older, I do bleed, a normal flow, even when swimming.
Hope this helps.

Usually I am a firm believer in the Mother knows best scenario.. But that is not the case here, YOU are right! Myself and most of the women I know DO bleed in both cases.. Yes, you bleed in the water, think about it, in the water you just dont notice it as much because of the water washing it away/making it disappear. Truth be known while you are sleeping is when most of your "accidents"(leakage) happens.

i bleed while lying down but only a little but as soon as i get up out of bed it come gushing out due to gravity of course and muscles in the vagina contracting.

also swimming u do bleed but like ppl say u wudnt see it becuz it is in a pool of water and will mix with the water and diffuse.

also for those who say you dont bleed while showering that is a lieeeeeeeee because i bleed alot while showering and i aint talking about sitting down in a tub full of water. i mean i am standing, taking a shower and it flows just as normal as i am not showering.

Lying down/sleeping, your flow continues. In fact, this is why there are menstrual pads specifically for nocturnal (nighttime) use - they're longer so that no matter how your lie down, you have a much smaller chance of your pad leaking.

In the shower or in any body of water, natural or artificial, it doesn't. But as soon as you're out of the water, your flow begins again.

Come on people, why do you think they invented TAMPONS in the first place, remember the ads and commercials? So you can go swimming and horse back riding and not have to worry about anything.. Quit telling this poor girl that it stops in the water!! That is not true. You do not see it because it disappears as soon as it comes out. DUH
*Do you honestly believe that if you laid in the tub for a week you could SKIP your period? Come on..
*Ask those questions to your Ob/gyn or your school nurse..

yes bleeding continues regardless how you would like to look at it. The only trick i was taught to stop the flow temp.(at the most 1hr)
real cold bath water. Uncomfortable, does work.
