Ever since a few weeks ago my processor load has been going through the roof. If im not doing anything its running at around 10-20% and when i open wmp it jumps close to 100. Even a web browser makes it jump near or to 100%. I've scanned for viruses and got rid of a few and made sure nothing is running in the background. The only thing I really have done lately is get a new case. Any help would be great.
What I am running:
Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 1.8ghz
asus p5nsli mother board
Ati Radeon X1950 pro 256mb
2 gb ram
500 w powersupply
antec super lan boy case

Thats unusually high for such a high spec'd machine. Does it do it momentarily or does it stay there?

A slight spike is understanable because the new features are very heavy applications that launch from a stop and don't have any pre-launch helpers. If its longer than 1 or 2 seconds, then I'd worry.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

you mite have spy ware or your aniti virus is sucking up alot of processor time/usage. I would do ctrl + alt +Delete , go to processes and sort by cpu usage (high to low) if you see something with a high % thats your problem, then just click it and end process but becareful something things must be running inorder for you operating system and pc to work

Cleaning the register is a good way of improving the performances of your pc and eliminate malwares and trojans. A program I trust is CCleaner http://j.mp/UrACoa
Very useful program!
