Excuse me, I'm one of those "hippies" that protested the Vietnam War. There's a BIG difference here. I don't seem to remember the Vietnamese crashing 2 civilian airliners into an American building and killing hundreds of civilians. I know you're going to say that Iraq wasn't responsible for the Trade Center bombing but use your brains for something besides a video game engine folks, radical Islamic terrorism originates in the middle east. There are guilty parties from all over the region. I didn't see genocide perpetrated by N Vietnam on S Vietnam the way Hussein killed hundreds if not thousands of his own countrymen. Kinda reminds me of WWII when some guy named Hitler decided to exterminate the Jews. Yea I know, war is nasty and people die, too many innocent people die. I hate it as much as anyone, but with great power comes great responsibility. We have a responsibility to protect people from men like Saddam and Adolph.

I was about 18 when the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam . I dont know if I qualify as a " hippie" but I , along with my wife and others have written letters, held signs on bridges and in parks and have done what we can to voice or opposition to the current war. The draft certainly added to the 60"s protest . I was sure I would end up in Nam after high school.........Peace
Also my wife worked for years with amnesty international trying to bring attention to the kind of things that Saddam and his ilk were doing while our government was supporting him

The hippies are now the older generation. Some will never adapt to what is happening now, but some will.
The new generation will not be one of "doing your own thing" like the hippies. The new generation will be skilled at teamwork.
The will not want to disrupt their lives to fight while they can live peacefully and prosperously at home, and nobody can force them. Hence the protests on YA.
But when they see the necessity, they will fight together. Nobody can stop them.

The young people of today do not care about the loss of our troops. Why? There is no draft. As one young college student told me a few days ago " As long as they ( Government ) do not force anyone to join the military then we do not care if they go and fight a losing war". He ended the conversation like this " Out of sight....Out of mind".

Same thing now as then... In the 60's getting on the news was one way of "getting the message out". Today the Internet does the same thing; it's just another way to "get the message out".

Some sold out -- example -- Jerry Brown
Some died -- example -- Abbie Hoffman
Some were killed -- example -- John Lennon
Those left are older, not in the greatest health, burnt out.
I can only speak for myself -- I sign all the petitions, vote, and do what I can. But to be honest, I sometimes wonder if this country is worth saving.
