I do believe that profanity is sometimes appropriate (in the Navy). But not in music. Lyrics are just poetry put to music. Poetry is written to be as ambiguous as possible in order to appeal to the largest audience; the same way lyrics are written for contemporary music. The use of curse words in music certainly does not add an ambiguous quality to it. Everyone knows what these words mean and they are not open to interpretation. Anyone can write a song using "cuss" words. It takes a talented artist to write something wonderful. P.S. This has nothing to do with someone's religous beliefs.

Since you've referenced this as Chrisitain...
I'd look at it from the "stumbling block" point of view.
If you've got a best friend that's Christain, and they think cuss words are from the debil, then if you listen to that music and it makes them think that you're of the debil, then it's not something you should be doing.
In the era where a lot of those words have lost their full meaning... it's a little harder to tell. There are quite a few Christian bands though-- mainstream has never been the Christian calling.

why would the fact that your are singing the word make a difference?
if you believe that cussing is wrong (which i suppose you do just based on the fact you are asking this question), it makes no difference if the word originates in your mouth or you are repeating the cuss word of a singer.
i suggest you find better music to listen to...profanity is only used by those who lack the vocabulary to express their thoughts otherwise.

Well, if you are worried about it, buy CDs that are edited or non-parental. Try listening to Kutless or Switchfoot, two awesome Christian bands.
In my opinion, they are just words that have specific meanings that may be offensive to some people. But if cuss words are considered bad, then why isn't "stupid, ugly, or retarded" considered a cuss word?

Oh silly silly people. There are no cuss words in the bible, mainly due to the fact it was written in Hebrew and Greek, not English which you would likely be speaking. These are people trying to prevent you from using words that they didn't like and blame God for not saying them. You cannot take the Lord's name in vane, but the others are just conservative people making your life tougher than it needs to be.
It is whatever you feel is right for you.

i guess it is ok to cuss if you are not cursing someone (respect thy neighbor) but i dont think i would see a priest singing a fiddy cent song, so it might not be the best thing, but also is not the worst thing..... although Jesus did say it doesnt matter what goes into your mouth, its what comes out so....

As a Christian, and if you are a true believer that our Savior Jesus Christ is with us at all times, then why would you listen to or say, or do anything wrong with Our Lord Jesus being there with you. I will pray for our Lord to show you the way.
In our Fathers Name

Ala-carte Christianity, you gotta love it!!! What does your Bible say about swearing??? Just because "everyone else is doing it" is poor justification for going against your religion's beliefs. Either you believe all of it, or none of it. You can't have it both ways, you know...
