Moss Side has a bad reputation, that for the most part is undeserved. I have been through Moss Side many times and never had any trouble what-so-ever (I am white too by the way). Ditto for Longsight (which I think IS rough).
Any city has it good and bad places. Manchester is a great city, but you still need to keep your wits about you like you would anywhere.

There are things you do in life and things you don't do. New York is a pretty safe place, but you wouldn't go for a stroll around Central Park at three in the morning. There are people who live and have lived in Moss Side all their lives and they do not spend every waking moment in fear of violence. They live, they interact and they belong. If you go wandering through the place as a disaster tourist and treat the place like some sort of zoo, then you will stand out a mile and you will have the potential of becoming a target, for which you will have only yourself to blame. If you have business or a specific purpose in going to Moss Side, other than gawping at the inmates, I think that your chances of being assaulted would be minimal.

I'm sure you'd be fine. No place is safe alone in the early hours of the morning but Moss Side gets very bad publicity. It doesn't scare me....

Moss side is similar to chappel town in Leeds . Not advisable to walk through late at night on your own but where is nowadays. I have some good mates living in chappel town and they say as long as you keep your wits about you ,your fine .

I dont know moss side - well, i know it but I have never been there, from what I imagine it to be like, no one should walk through there!.

lol it isn't that bad there anymore because of urban regeneration n all that. Avoiding eye contact in possible hostile situations is always a good idea though :oO you wanna try walking about round some areas of Swansea pmsl

If you creep around looking furtively from left to right,peek round corners,or stop to check a Lonely Planet guide book,no.If you stomp through as if you own the place,you'll be fine.
