My boyfriends name is Barry and I keep taking the mick out of it. On tv programmes, Barry is always the fat man, or the stupid man or someone that is not very nice. It just makes me laugh. I know I'm sad! But anyway....his name is spelled Barri and he reckons it's the Welsh way of spelling it, but I can't find that anywhere, books or the internet. Barry is Irish I think anyway. I reckon his mother made it up, lol. Can anyone find the spelling of this anywhere on the net?? BTW no offense to any Barry's out there, it's the medias fault!

I don't care really but when I say my boyfriends name is Barri it reminds people of the tubby bloke off Aufwiedersen pet (is that how you spell it?)

Yes, Y Barri is the original, welsh name for the town of Barry.

If memory serves it's the name of an irish saint. I think the town took its name from the island (Barry Island - now a faded beach resort - but a lot of fun), which was a base for raids in the middle ages.

De Barri was also a norman name and it's possible that that could have been the origin too, but i doubt it as it's quite an old place.

Regarding the spelling. Lots of people are now reverting to older versions of popular names. For example, Rhys Ifans the actor was born Evans. This can only be a good thing so, yeah, go Barri's mam!

Y Barri is the Welsh version of Barry.
What is wrong with Barry, it is an amiable slow witted overweight lad by stereotype, Barri is a welsh prat. You dont find davids called Daffydd very often do you.
Why not try Deed Poll, Rawtenstall may be a suitable name, or Fartalot, or Badschmelling, Gutrott, Derrick, Griswald or Pistof, or see the book Jabberwocky by the Python team for other suggestions.

To me a name is not at all as important as the person. I do think barri is Welch spelling.
