It is hard to stab someone in the back if they are facing you. This is true both figuratively and literally.

it means keep your true friends close to you like family but keep your enemies closer so you can keep a watch on them at all times meaning if their your enemy don't tell them let them think your their friend so when something goes wrong you will expect it

I just heard this expression a few weeks ago. I think it means to keep tabs on your enemies so that you can possibly figure out what they might be planning.
Or maybe it means try to make friends with them.
Really it could be interpreted either way. It's not an expression I've heard often, 'tho.

It means like you don't want to run into an enemy so always know where they are unlike a friend.

Your friends will be there for you no matter what and you can trust them...so you will keep them close
Your enemies will try to harm you and disgrace you...so stay close to them to protect yourself, also you have to act extra special nice to them to stop them from doing the above and be able to watch your back

i suppose it means to get on the good side of your enemies if you have to say work with them. your friends you can trust and dont need to keep tabs on. something like that

it means...dont let your enemy know you dont like them. Be close to them so they will tell you things. If you dont keep them close then you will not know wht they are doing or what they are up to. THey could hurt you when you are not looking but if they are close you will see what is coming.

Know what your enemies like, where they hang out, who are their friends.Where do their folks live?
Its a way of protecting yourself from them doing you a bad deed.
If your enemies know that you know all this stuff, they will be less inclined to upset you.
