you want be thankful that you even have the food in the first place! people pray after they eat also.

At least in our house, we are asking for a blessing on the food we are about to eat.
I think it is more than OK to pray any time!

When a person prays before a meal; they're not really giving thanks for the food they're asking God not to let them choke.
