Hands down, Jimi Hendrix. To this day, even the most accomplished guitarists have a hard time trying to tell exactly what he was doing to his instrument to get some of the sounds he got. He also pioneered rock and roll through his innovative use of distortion and the wah pedal, which was unheard of in the 60's, but is now a staple to any serious guitar player's line of effects. He also had an extensive background in blues, which is commonly considered one of the hardest styles of music to play well on guitar. Jimi's influence can be felt nearly everywhere you look, and in some surveys done on guitar players asking their top five influences, roughly 99% of them say Jimi Hendrix. He was also named guitar player of the century, most influential guitarist, and best guitarist ever by Guitar World magazine. The guy was just on another plane of existence from the rest of us.

Michael Hedges sadly he died on December 2nd 1997, I truely lost a big part of my heart and spirit when this happened. I was lucky to see him live in concert.

(For information about him see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Hedges)

There is nobody on God’s green earth that plays the guitar like Michael Hedges.” - Steve Vai

Michael Hedges is the guitarist from another planet.” - William Ackerman

"In Michael's hands, a guitar was a living, breathing extension of his deepest parts. It's almost as if he got so inside its body that the instrument was reborn. His passion for creating those exquisite melodies and technique was as focused as it was abandoned. There was simply no one like him." - Bonnie Raitt
