If there are elves in the gravy, why must the pigeon herniate at midnight?

It's not a necessity, it's more of a courtesy. When the elves gravify themselves, they expect the pigeons to herniate in kind. If they don't, it's a huge insult to the Elfin Gravy Priests.

Of course, all of this happens at midnight because, well, ALL cool things happen at midnight.

Get the elves out of the gravy! Because if the pigeon herniates at midnight, you are going to have liquid pigeon everywhere!

Because you don't want the elves in the gravy. They only way for them to disappear is to allow the pigeon to herniate at midnight. One stroke past, they will melt. One stroke before they will disappear forever in time.
