Sleep is definitely the best way to recover from a cold. The trick is actually getting to sleep when you can hardly breathe. A humidifier is always a good idea to have in your room because they can possibly alleviate the stress in your nasal passages.
Once you can breathe properly, nyquil or any other medicine that is intended to cause drowsiness is great. Ibuprofen can also help to reduce fevers and headaches that may make it difficult to sleep.
If you prefer to catch a good night's sleep naturally, make sure that you are very comfortable and that is dark. Soothing music also helps.
Finally, if at all possible, eat as much food as possible. The body naturally falls into a state of relaxation after a large meal. The process of digestion should cause you to fall asleep.
Feel better, best wishes.

Drinking something warm helps me. I usually keep beef or chicken broth that comes in the cans in the pantry. Then I'll just fill a cup and pop in microwave. Breathing in the steam from the cup also helps clear the head too! Very soothing for what ails ya.
