I have noticed many conservatives here continue to believe that America is behind Bush and his war, despite all electoral evidence to the contrary. But do you ever stop to think what actually happened in November? How do you explain it?

I honestly don't think the war was the reason for all the defeats. It WAS an issue, there is no doubt, but I think the rampant corruption and ineptitude was the main reason. I don't suppose you remember the 80's? When the same thing happened to the Dems? It happened for the same reasons (minus Iraq). The Dems back then spun it into a victory for themselves by saying they were trimming the fat. I'm sure the same thing will happen with the Reps. If you'll look, most of the Dems that got elected are moderates. That turned out to be the lesser of two evils for some Reps, so they voted for the Dems.

Bush is not, never was, never has been, and never will be a conservative. His six year record has proven this and conservatives stayed home or voted in protest against him - not necessarily against the war, but against the limp wristed way he has prosecuted the war. His pathetic attempt at cutting taxes while increasing government spending on numerous arguably liberal programs has whizzed off many conservatives.

Conservatives have taught the Republicans a lesson this last election cause sometimes you have to bleed a little bit to get better. Please don't confuse the Republican party fiasco with conservatism. They are not necessarily one and the same. The Republican Party is currently pathetic and will continue to lose elections unless it learns how to play the game like the Democrats do. Nice guys finish last in War and Politics.

I explain it this way. The conservative republicans were pushed aside for years by the extremists among their own party. Throw in the religious right and you had a disaster in the making. November was that disaster. It might be a blessing in disguise by allowing the more moderate voices in the republican party to be heard again.

It only took a lousy Foley scandal, the War on Terror, a macacaw remark, a Michael J.Fox phoney ad, Bob Ney having to step down, Tom Delay having to step down and don't forget the worst natural disaster to happen in our country blamed on the President wanting to kill black people. Go figure, who woulda thought all this could happen to the GOP in a year's time? I hope they learned their lesson but I fear for a future with the dems in charge.

The Republican base walked out on the party. It had a lot more to do with the spending being out of control. I looked up the voting in my district the 5th in CT. Nancy Johnson lost by a lot. She lost 44% of the votes she got in 2004, while her opponent gained only about 10%.

Don't be too hard on them.

They won't admit to any kind of "defeat" anyway.

How can this great nation move forward and finally DEAL with the issues that many would like to ignore............in spite of them being like a dead horse under the table?

there is no explanation necessary
the people of this nation are more conservative in views that liberal
and they hate bush because of the disaster in iraq

the voters just couldn't bring themselves to vote for a part with anything in common with bush

especially the letter next to their names

We fired dead weight! Libs did not win, most Dems that advanced were moderate. I can guarantee you one thing, it was no landslide! No Mandate-or Womandate if that's all you could find for Speaker!
I can also assure you, that legislation stopping all of the illegal invasion and Anchor baby BS better get done or there will be many more pink slips handed out the next election!

many people dont pay that much attention to politics. they usually only look at results. since their hearing that the war is going nowhere, they would obviously go for what they think is the lesser of two evils, which are the democrats.

oddly enough, the 'spin' i kept reading after the elections was that they weren't conservative enough...which shows you just how out of touch with reality they have become...and that 'disconnect', i believe, is what led to their defeat...of course, the fact that they're led by a complete and utter moron who lied to get us into a war against a fourth-rate enemy that he can't seem to defeat had a lot to do with it...
