Hi there, My Astra Coupe has a Hydraulic Clutch and the Slave Cylinder needs replacing - How easy is this to change?

Basically the part is about £90.00 and Labour is about £200 but I am out of work at the moment and dont have the money - But I need the car for my job - Your replies will be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks very much for the replies so far, the cylinder is within the gearbox - How eary is it to drop to replace the cylinder? do i need any special tools?

1. the gear box needs to come out
2. you need a fare amount of tools
3. you need to know a fare amount of mechaical knowlage!
4. if box is out you may as well replace clutch at same time
5. good luck they are f ing heavey when puting back in on your own!

yes they are in the box 2nd they do cost as much as you say because they are all part of the clutch release bearing and u cant buy kits. You don't need any special tool except a ramp you wont get it out on the ground, plus if you don't know what your doing then DON'T do it. They are heavy plus they have a lot of electrical connections and sensors all around. you could cost yourself 3 times the amount a garage wanted to do the job . Also you cant be out of work and need the car for your job .. if your out of work u haven't got a job.

If I remember correctly the Astra has it's slave cylinder within the gearbox bell-housing, and the gearbox has to come off to get to it. That will be the reason for the high labour charge.

If I'm mistaken, then just ignore me for misleading you.

How do you know it needs replaced ?? If it is leaking it needs to be rebuilt, all you need is a kit, much less than new one. If not leaking then don't need replaced. I can't believe a slave cylinder could cost that much. Wheel cylinders, same thing, are less than US $20
