That is the question I am hard pressed to answer. I have been lucky enough to be able to take almost a year off from the work force. What is the best way to answer that question without sounding like a flake?

You say you've been "lucky" enough to lay low, tell them why. Most employers really like honest and candid answers. Might even strike up an interesting conversation.

It depends on what you actually did with the year off. If you did nothing to make yourself more employable or a lot of volunteer work it will be hard to justify taking the time off. If you needed it to unwind and destress than I would explain that to them. The one thing that you do not want to say is none of your business. What an employer is wondering is what did you do with this time. If you traveled the world seeing all of the sights or did something else that was creative that is what they are looking for. If all you did was spend a year doing nothing than most employers would think that you wasted a golden opportunity.

Well, is this question coming from a potential employer, or just someone in general. If it's someone in general, it's none of their business. If it's an employer, you could tell them you had the good fortune to be able to take off for some personal time. That should be the end of it.

I sold my business that I operated for 18 years and 2 homes and am now retired for the rest of my life. Retirement suits me so very good it's scary. My home on the lake is paid for and I bought a 2007 Yaris for cash and paid off my truck. No bills. I Love It! Am I bragging? You bet your bippy, but it's all true.
