Cry Freedom. Based on the true story of Steve Biko (played by Denzel Washington). Biko fought against the apartheid system in South Africa and suspiciously died in police custody. He befriended white publisher Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) and the story is as much about the publication of Woods investigation into Biko's death than about Biko's life.

Three very telling moments - the shooting dead of 700 South African school children protesting at being taught Africaans in school, Biko's funeral which was attended by immense corwds and the closing scenes where the names of those who died suspiciously in police custody scroll across the screen.

One of the very few films that has actually helped change the world for the better. For many, this was the film that awakened them to apartheid.

The original Captains Courageous starring Freddie Bartholomew. It's a story about a spoiled rich kid who falls off his yacht and gets picked up by a fishing boat, where he learns what it's like to be human and have to work for his supper. The end gets me. He's reunited with his father, and the two of them pay tribute to the now deceased father-figure who had cared for the boy on the fishing boat. Waaaaaaah.

I know this answer is really cheesy but my faves are 80s movies. Like my #1 fave, Girls Just Want To Have Fun. I love practically all Molly Ringwald movies. Private Benjamin is also at the top of my list! :)
