As someone said though, it does depend on which DM era is your favorite.The Bands I have just recommended fit in with beginning and recent Depeche Mode. If you are a fan of the middle DM period, which includes Songs of Faith and Devotion and Ultra, I d recommend Nine Inch Nails( their softer, slower songs)

More recent bands would be She Wants Revenge and the Killers; DM were big influences on those two. None of those 80's bands other people listed really capture the sound and feel of their darker songs from the 90's.

well they don't sound similar to anything by depeche mode because they are the most unique band i've ever heard...but if you are looking for sullen & dark RADIOHEAD is your band my man. They pretty much invented depressing music..ish

it depends what periods of depeche mode you like.
early dm was all plinky upbeat synth, later 80's dm got a bit darker, then 90's dm got super dark when dave was doing drugs, then they mellowed after dave cleaned up.
