must you say main character? can you fit it into your essay earlier? cuz then you could say "The author (usually you should write the last name of the author instead of writing "the author") uses jerry's curiosity and....." or maybe, if you really need to add the main character part, you could say, "The Author's use of curiosity and blah blah in Jerry, the main character, shows....."

Try something like "Through Jerry's curiosity, the author is whatever" . You will probably identify Jerry as the main character elsewhere in the essay.

Through the main character of Jerry, the author is able to demonstrate a wide range of emotions. It is from this character that we learn about his need for discovery, and of his own curious disposition.

The author imbues her main character, Jerry, with the traitof curiousity. This trait is unveiled as being so strong that the trait itself becomes a character in the story on its own.
