We can.

Some countries (where the oil companies aren't too dominating) are producing "bio-diesel" domestically and the number of gas stations selling it are expanding in those countries. They can make a petrol/gas alternative from sugar cane alcohol too and this is very widely used in some South American countries. Canola is popular as a source for biodiesel but any vegetable oil is good as long as it is refined to the right viscosity. Biodiesel is by far the most practical and feasible fuel alternative.

The smart folks are the ones with diesel cars. The fuel economy is far greater than petrol/gas, the maintenance and reliability is far better too and bio-diesel which is a renewable & green fuel requires no engine modification.

do you mean why can't we run on vegetable oil?
Anyway, we can't produce enough to satisfy all diesel consumers. It does give out less sulfur dioxide fumes and carborn dioxide levels are maintained because the plant that the vegetable oil comes from takes in carbon dioxide in the photosynthesis process, but then it's used for cars which produce it - so their is no increase is CO2. So, yes it would be good for us to run on it, but the fact that enough can't be made is the main thing.

You asked why can't "we" run on diesel?

Although diesel which is derived from oil by fractional distillation was originally formed from living organisms, it no longer contains any parts that can be metabolised by the human body.
Apparently mineral oil can be used as a laxative though.
Diesel may also contain a biocide to prevent the growth of algae which would be poisonous to ingest.

because it's not a feasible mass produced fuel. Not yet anyway. Some people do it on a personal level. The exhaust smells like vegetable oil or cooking oil..it's cool.

But until we can mass produce all of those vegetables in a way that can be distributed easilly it won't happen.
